Boast Later Budget Now (Pt. 2)

Michael, a college student juggling classes, a part-time job, and a social life, started realizing that keeping track of his spending wasn’t as easy as it used to be. Between tuition, rent, groceries, and hanging out with friends, his finances were getting more complicated. He knew he needed a better way to manage his money, so he began exploring different budgeting tools to help him stay on top of his finances.

Why Budgeting Tools Matter

Michael knew that budgeting wasn’t just about cutting back on spending—it was about understanding where his money was going and making sure he had enough for the things that mattered most. Whether it was saving up for a spring break trip, paying off his student loans, or just making sure he could cover rent every month, having a budget would give him control over his finances and reduce the stress of wondering where his money went.

Choosing the Right Budgeting Tools

With so many options out there, Michael needed to find the budgeting tools that would work best for his lifestyle and financial goals. Here’s what he considered:

Spreadsheets

Michael liked the idea of creating his own budget from scratch, so he started with a simple spreadsheet. He opened up Google Sheets and began building his budget.

  • Customization: Using a spreadsheet allowed Michael to tailor his budget exactly to his needs. He listed all his income sources, like his part-time job and any financial aid, and then broke down his expenses into categories like rent, utilities, groceries, and entertainment.

  • Manual tracking: While spreadsheets required him to input his expenses manually, Michael appreciated the hands-on approach. Entering his spending regularly made him more aware of his habits and gave him a sense of control.

  • Templates: He also found plenty of free budget templates online, which helped him get started without having to design everything from scratch.

Budgeting Apps

Given his busy schedule, Michael knew an app might be a more convenient way to track his spending on the go. He looked into a few budgeting apps that could automatically sync with his bank accounts.

  • Automatic tracking: Budgeting apps like Mint and YNAB (You Need a Budget) could link directly to his bank accounts, automatically categorizing his spending. This made it easy for Michael to see where his money was going without having to manually input every transaction.

  • Goal setting: These apps also allowed him to set savings goals, like putting aside money for that spring break trip or paying off his student loans faster. Seeing his progress in real-time motivated him to stick to his budget.

  • Notifications: Michael loved that these apps could send him alerts when he was close to hitting his spending limit in a particular category. This feature helped him avoid overspending without having to constantly check his budget.

Envelope System

Michael also considered the envelope system, a more old-school method that some of his friends swore by.

  • Cash-only: The envelope system involved dividing his monthly cash into different envelopes for each spending category—like groceries, entertainment, and gas. Once an envelope was empty, he couldn’t spend any more in that category until the next month.

  • Visual budgeting: While this method was a bit more hands-on, it made budgeting very tangible. Michael knew that physically seeing how much money was left in each envelope could help him stick to his budget better than swiping a card.

Making a Decision

After exploring his options, Michael decided to start with a budgeting app that synced with his bank accounts. The automatic tracking and notifications fit perfectly with his busy lifestyle, allowing him to stay on top of his finances without much effort. However, he also kept his spreadsheet on hand for more detailed planning and to keep a closer eye on his long-term goals. By combining these tools, Michael felt confident that he could manage his money better and take control of his financial future.
